Lina Zhang

Legal Research & Self-Defence Writer

Lina Zhang is a Vancouver-based writer and legal researcher who focuses on Canadian self-defence laws, lawful safety tools, and women’s rights. At StaySafeVancouver, Lina helps readers understand how Canada’s Criminal Code applies to real-world safety situations, from carrying personal protection devices to responding to threats within the limits of the law.

Her writing bridges the gap between everyday experience and legal understanding. By analysing statutes, police statements, and real case studies, Lina makes complex topics like “reasonable force” and “lawful defence” accessible to all readers.

Lina’s Story

Lina joined StaySafeVancouver after meeting founder Cindy Peterson through a shared interest in Canadian law and women’s safety. While studying communications and legal studies at the University of British Columbia, she began researching the differences between perception and legality when it comes to self-defence in Canada.

Her background in legal writing and policy research allows her to explain nuanced topics with clarity. Lina believes that informed citizens are empowered citizens — and that understanding your rights is the foundation of personal safety. See our Legal Disclaimer for more information.

Outside of writing, Lina enjoys running along the False Creek Seawall, exploring food spots in Mount Pleasant, and volunteering at local community workshops that promote women’s safety awareness.
